Prosthesis is artificial constructs as a replacement of aeshthetic and functional needs of missing teeth which are lost as a result of various reasons. While trying to regain lost functions of the patient, prosthesis also improve speech impediments and gives a better aesthetic appearance. This gives the patient most of the oral health back but also helps to improve mental health of the individuals.

There are 3 groups of dental prosthesis.

1- Fixed (Porcelain crowns that are applied to one or more teeth)

2- Removable (Like total prosthesis which is applied toothless mouths)

3. Implant supported prosthesis

The best results in prosthetic treatment are achived by keeping as much as natural remaining teeth, supporting them by implants if needed and working in the framework of aeshthetic denstistry.

Fixed prostheses are just like normal teeth so should be brushed regularly and controlled by your dentist every 6 months. Hygiene of the removable prosthesis is made with some cleaning agents. Prosthesis can be cleaned by placing it in the water with effervescent tablets. If the agent is not available, denture cleaning can also be done with with a toothbrush or a denture cleaning brush. In addition, partial removable prosthesis can be removed and placed back after the dental care of your mouth and the prosthesis. However, in total prosthesis even removing the prosthesis and rinsing the mouth may be enough.

Orientation for prosthesis usage

Prosthesis is a subject that takes some time to get used to. Even well-made prostheses may need some time depends on patients' personalities. Patiens must get small bites and chew slowly without opening lips in this period of time. Initially, they need to try to chew on both sides and try to get used to the feeling. Also soft foods are advised on the first days of the prosthesis.

If there are disturbing point on the prosthesis, these can be fixed by your dentist to improve your comfort. Total prostheisis usually takes 4-6 week to get used to them. Patients must be patience and determined to use prosthesis and should consider their dentist advices in this period.

Patients should not give up so soon and remove the prosthesis. This usually happens in the patients who are already using prosthesis. When they feel any discomfort, they just remove the new prosthesis and return to the old one. But this behaviour may cause a very long time to get used to the new prosthesis.

Prostheses may create small changes in the mouth. These changes may cause difficulties in pronunciation of some sounds. The patient can start to speak normally as before if read aloud and repeating the sounds that he/she can not pronunce correctly. But the problems caused by front teeth can only be solved by your dentist.
