Pedodontics is the branch deals with children and young people's teeth diseases and treatments until the completion of the permanent dentition.

The first task of child's primary teeth is to provide nutrition properly. In addition, the proper development of speech depends on the presence of milk teeth.

Milk teeth preserve the area that they cover for permanent teeth while guiding them during replecement.

Should milk teeth treated?

Untreated milk tooth decays may cause pain, bad smell, chewing difficulties, eating disorders and lead to an ugly image. In this period, untreated dental problems may cause dental deformity, disorder in the development of the jaw and general health problems (heart disease as arthritis) in the future. Therefore, milk tooth decay, without falling into the delusion of "the new ones will come instead this" and should be treated.

How times my kid should brush teeth?

Three minutes of effective brushing right after breakfast and just before bed at night is usually sufficient. Like every good habit, tooth brushing habit is also gained in childhood.

• There is only a total of 20 milk teeth.
• Primary teeth is normal to have open gaps. The reason for this is to create enough place for the future permanent teeth.
• Caries may occur in primary teeth. This certainly should be treated.
• If there is in inflammation, root canal therapy should be tried before the milk teeth pulled out.
• If milk teeth are prematurely pulled out, this may cause difficulties to preserve enough space for future permanent teeth.

Emergencies in child's teeth

• Dental Pain:
  Clear the area around the sore tooth. Gargle with warm salt water and remove food particles stuck in, if any with dental floss. Do not place aspirin or similar drugs on the tooth. Give your child a pain reliever that you have tried it before and take it to a dentist as soon as possible.
• Bitten lip, tongue, or cheek:
  Put ice on wounded region. If the wound is bleeding, gently apply pressure with a clean gauze. If bleeding does not stop within 15 minutes, contact with your dentist.
• If teeth is totaly lost:
  Locate the tooth. Hold it without touching the root. The ideal environment to keep it is milk, store it in milk until you reach to your dentist.
• Trauma on Teeth:
  Without losing any time, contact your dentist. Every hour lost after the traumas increases the damage of injury.
• Until you reach the Dentist:
  Clean the wound with warm water. Apply cold compress to that region.Bring all the pieces of broken tooth.

Fissure Sealant

One of the most effective methods used to prevent tooth decays in the early period of childhood is fissure sealing (dental fillings with fluid on the deep recesses of the closure of ledges).

Fissur sealant covers the chewing surfaces of molars and protects against decays. Generally, 6 years teeth or 1st Large Molar teeth usually appears between 5 and 7 years old. Second molars or 12 years teeth come out between 11 and 14 years old. Studies indicate that 90% of tooth decays start at small but deep and norrow cavities (pits and fissures).

Very young teeth, because of tooth enamel is not fully calcified or matured, are usually weaker and more suitable tooth decay formations. The best time for fissure selant application is this first months of young teeth. Milk teeth are also get protected by fissure sealant. But if there ıs a tooth decay and it is already reached to dentin region, then PRR (Prevtive Resin Restoration) method is a better way rather then fissure sealant for your child's mouth health.

It should be also noted that dental caries in children, especially on young teeth, can progress very fast. For this reason, fissure sealants must be applied as soon as possible
